My mom has been making this recipe for years and it has always been a family favorite. Originally from The Pepper Pot Cookbook, I change it around to work with what I happen to have on hand. Don’t have black beans? Sub with your favorite (or what you have available) beans.
Turkey Chilli
Ingredients
- 1 Tbsp olive oil
- 1 large onion chopped
- 3 garlic cloves minced
- 1 red pepper chopped
- 1 green pepper chopped
- 1 1/2 lbs ground turkey
- 2 Tbsp flour
- 3 Tbsp chili powder
- 2 Tbsp ground cumin
- 2 tsp powdered cocoa
- 1-2 tsp cayenne pepper
- 1/4 cup red wine vinegar
- 2 Tbsp strong brewed coffee
- 28 oz can plum tomatoes
- salt to taste
- 2 15 oz cans black beans
Instructions

Heat the oil over medium heat in a large dutch oven. Add the onions, garlic and both peppers. Saute for about 5 minutes. Add the turkey and brown until cooked through.

Stir in the flour, chili powder, cumin, cayenne and cocoa. Cook over low heat for a couple of minutes. Add the cayenne, vinegar, coffee, tomatoes and salt. Bring to a boil and simmer for 45 minutes.

Add the black beans and cook for 10 more minutes.

Serve with your favorite chili toppings (sour cream, cheddar cheese, scallions, avocado, etc)!
